Scientific Officer to the Director
Giulia Merker studied East Asian Studies with focus on Sinology and German in Cultural Comparison at the University of Heidelberg, at the North China University of Technology and at the Beijing Foreign Studies University. In her Master's degree she focused on modern Chinese Studies and Transcultural Studies and spent one semester at the National Taiwan University. To gain practical experience Giulia Merker completed internships at the German Institute Taipei and at the Chinese NGO International Green Economy Association. In her master's thesis, she investigated how the multi-level characteristics of Chinese politics condition the development and expansion of innovative technologies through the example of offshore wind energy.
As business consultant and project manager at D&O Consulting GmbH, Giulia Merker advised Chinese start-up companies in Germany. Since November 2020, she has been working in the BMBF-funded project China-School-Academy at the University of Heidelberg.
From November 2020, Giulia Merker got to know the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research as part of her work on the research project “Crisis management and resilience – Corona”. Since May 2021, she has been working in the research team of the director of the Fraunhofer ISI in Karlsruhe, contributing her expertise within the fields of innovation, sustainability and digitalization. As a Sinologist, she is particularly interested in looking beyond borders, concepts, topics and disciplines.
