Uncontrollable artificial intelligence (AI): Are we still in control?

The University:Future Festival (UFFestival) took place from June 5 to 7, 2024 under the motto "Tales of Tomorrow". Lectures, workshops and meet-ups offered a varied program around visions and futures from a society-wide perspective.

The JIH was delighted with the great interest and lively discussions at our workshop "Uncontrollable AI" on the AI Campus Stage in Heilbronn.

The concern of losing control over AI has long preoccupied humanity in connection with the progressive development of intelligent systems. Going beyond philosophical approaches and visions from the numerous science fiction universes, the JIH pursues a scientific approach to this problem and possible development paths that is as close to reality as possible.

After a brief introduction, we had inspiring discussions in our workshop about possible influencing factors and how they could interact to eventually lead to the loss of control over an AI system. However, some of the thoughts did not lead too far into the future: AI-supported deep fakes and their use for the purpose of disinformation are already a major problem today and, as our participants also saw it, this could already be considered a loss of control. However, AI systems can also be misused on a smaller scale to mislead people, e.g. by manipulating training data (poisoning attack).

Responsible use of the technology (responsible AI) and appropriate protection of the systems (AI security) are therefore more important than ever. The Joint Innovation Hub supports its clients from business, politics, administration and civil society in the areas of innovation, digitalization & AI, sustainability and strategic foresight.
