Stakeholder analysis on the occasion of the planned establishment of a German Centre for Research and Innovation (DWIH) in San Francisco

The German Academic Exchange Service is planning to establish a German Centre for Research and Innovation (DWIH) in the Bay Area, probably in San Francisco.

Fraunhofer ISI was conducting a stakeholder analysis to identify existing needs and options for action in this context, as well as to determine expectations both in the Bay Area and on the German side. The project was carried out in cooperation with the Competence Centers Innovation and Knowledge Economy as well as Policy and Society.

The study analysed which main objectives a DWIH on the West Coast of the USA could pursue and which activities could be used to develop a unique selling point for the institution. In particular, the study examined what DWIH could offer to local stakeholders and target groups that are aligned with the special innovation culture of the Bay Area and California as a whole.

For the implementation of the Stakeholder analysis, a method mix of predominantly qualitative and some quantitative data collection methods was used:

  • Literature and document analysis
  • Secundary statistical analyses
  • Expert Interviews
  • Focus groups
