ICCEE: Improving Cold Chain Energy Efficiency

The EU-funded project ICCEE (Improving Cold Chain Energy Efficiency) dealt with reducing the energy consumption and the greenhouse gas emissions of the European food cold storage sector by offering a combination of knowledge-based information packages and tools for cold supply chain operators in SMEs.

The cold chain of the food and beverage sector has substantial energy requirements due to refrigerated transport, processing and storage. Energy saving potentials become especially relevant if the perspective is shifted away from a single company towards the optimization of entire cold supply chains.

The ICCEE project aimed at supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in cold chains of the food sector to understand and implement energy efficiency measures within cold supply chains. To do so, it sought to a) implement and apply an analytical energy efficiency toolbox to support and facilitate decision-making at different company organisational levels and b) to launch a capacity building program towards staff and relevant stakeholders and a community dedicated to support a change in energy culture of the sector. In that context, EEMs were to be evaluated by considering economic and environmental impacts encompassing the entire life cycle of EEMS along the cold supply chain. In addition, non-energy benefits and behavioural aspects were to be investigated.
