Dr. Songmin Yu

Researcher

Songmin Yu is a senior researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI). He obtained his Ph.D. in Management Science and Engineering from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2018. After a visiting period at ISI, he joined as a senior researcher in 2020, initially in the Department of Energy Policy and Energy Markets and since January 2025 in the Department of Energy Technology and Energy Systems.

His research focuses on energy and climate policy modeling, with particular focus on the building sector. He specializes in energy system modeling and agent-based approaches, contributing to both EU Horizon Programme projects (newTRENDs, ECEMF, etc.) and German policy consultancy work (Politikszenarien, RokiG2050, etc.). His research is published in journals including European Journal of Operational Research, Applied Energy, Energy Economics, Energy Efficiency, etc.

As an advocate for open science, Songmin Yu leads the development of four open-source projects: FLEX (modeling suite for household behaviour and energy community interactions), Render (agent-based energy demand modeling framework with an implementation for the building stock in Germany), Melodie (general agent-based modeling framework in Python), and tab2dict (data management tool for scientific modeling).
