Tim Mandel - Fraunhofer ISI

Researcher

Dr Tim Mandel has been working as a Research Associate in the Energy Policy Division of the Competence Center Energy Policy and Energy Markets at Fraunhofer ISI since 2019. His research focuses on energy systems modelling, particularly in the area of decarbonizing the building sector through energy efficiency and related electricity and heat infrastructures. In addition, he theoretically and empirically investigates the effectiveness of corresponding regulatory and financial policy instruments.

Dr Mandel works on these topics in various European and national research projects, such as ENEFIRSTplus and REGIO1st, as well as in consulting projects, including the regular greenhouse gas projections for Germany commissioned by the Federal Environment Agency (UBA).

In 2024, Dr Mandel received his PhD from the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. His dissertation addressed the theoretical-conceptual foundations and the quantitative impacts of the Energy Efficiency First principle in European energy and climate policy. Previously, he studied Environmental Sciences with a focus on energy and materials research at Utrecht University, where he dedicated his master's thesis to the integration of variable renewable energies into long-term energy systems modelling.
